CV Summary

Gavin Killeen

Managing Director

Gavin was educated at Foyle and Londonderry College, Derry and then studied Business Studies at the University of Ulster, Jordanstown, graduating in 1989. After graduation Gavin joined Desmond & Sons Ltd, the then largest private employer in Northern Ireland and based in the North West, having spent a placement year with the company. After 18 months as a Management Trainee Gavin was promoted to Production Manager of the Omagh factory. Gavin spent another five years with Desmonds before moving on to the Nena Group in Donegal. In 1997 Gavin joined Nuprint as General Manager and returned to UUJ to study for a part-time M Sc in Business Improvement at the Ulster Business School in 2001.

Nuprint had supplied garment labels to major blue chip companies such as M&S, Dunnes Stores, Fruit of the Loom, Adria, Desmonds and Sara Lee to name a few. By 2001 Gavin had grown the business and transformed it into a global player through the implementation of a Management Information System developed under a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with the University of Ulster, Magee, which won a national award in 2002. In 2004, Gavin along with Alan McClure, the original founder of both Nuprint and Perfecseal, decided to purchase the company with the view to taking it in a completely different direction to focus on the food, drink & beverage sectors. In order to break into these sectors major investment was made in both people and equipment. As a result of this strategic change Nuprint has managed to broaden and deepen its customer base to become a design led printer of labels to world-class companies internationally.

Since the purchase of the business in 2004 Nuprint has maintained its Investors in People status, achieved ISO 9001:2000 UKAS and in 2006 achieved the BRC/IoP food packaging high standard which is also UKAS product certified. Nuprint, when measured against the European Model of Excellence EFQM, scored 450 points and was awarded a Mark of Excellence at the 2006 NI Quality Awards. Only the top 20% of all European companies assessed score 400+ points so this is quite an achievement for a small company. Nuprint is one of only nine Northern Ireland based private sector companies in the past six years to have been awarded the Mark of Excellence and this demonstrates its commitment to a systematic approach to driving improvement across all aspects of the business.

Gavin was appointed Chair of the North West Workforce Development Forum in 2010, which is a DEL appointment. He has also been a DENI appointee on the Board of Governors of Foyle and Londonderry College since 2006, a board member of Young Enterprise North-West and is Vice-President Elect of the Londonderry Rotary Club.
