IoD Northern Ireland Annual Lunch

17th October 2014

Nigel first achieved world class recognition as an athlete when he represented GB in the 1980s as a high hurdler on 30 occasions including the World Championships and the Olympic Games.

He ‘retired’ from athletics in 1992 to pursue a second career as a rugby union player with Cardiff RFC. In his first season he was capped for Wales at full international level against Ireland and went on to accrue 17 caps.

Outside the sporting arena, Nigel has worked as a TV presenter and commentator, was Head of Sport with BBC Wales, then Head of Internal Communication and Change, and Programme Director for the BBC Wales Drama Village – supervising the construction of the 170,000 square foot building which has been used to produce programmes such as Dr Who and Casualty.

In 2010 he moved into his current role with the English Institute of Sport, where he has responsibility for sport science and medicine provision to elite athletes across all sports in Team GB and Paralympic GB.

Based on his sporting and media experiences, Nigel will be talking about the challenges of motivating teams versus motivating individuals, and developing a ‘can do’ culture.
