IoD NI Annual Lunch
25th October 2013
Sponsored by Rainbow Communications working with EE the Annual Lunch is our main event of the autumn and the guest speaker entrepreneur/mentor Mike Southon one of the UK's top business speakers.
Post University, Mike tried performing in music and theatre and then moved into construction and sales, eventually starting his own business in training. He co-founded The Instruction Set in January 1984 and five years later had 150 employees in the UK and USA with a turnover of £7.5m, eventually selling in 1989 to Hoskyns (now Cap Gemini Ernst & Young).
With a two year earn-out, Mike left the business in 1991 and retired. Boredom brought him back into the business world three months later and he began to help friends with their start-ups. Since then, he has worked on about 17 start-ups, some just helping out a mate for 6 months, others serious ventures that eventually went public (such as Micromuse, RiverSoft), and gaining a mentor, Sir Campbell Fraser.
A visiting lecturer at Cass Business School, he started writing business books with his old friend Chris West. The first of these was based on turning his somewhat unusual life experiences into a methodology for turning a good idea in a pub to a great business: 'The Beermat Entrepreneur', sold over 75,000 in the UK, and is also published in Netherlands, Spain Japan, Russia, China, India, Thailand, Lithuania, Indonesia and Romania.
Today, Mike is one of the most experienced entrepreneur mentors in the UK, having completed over 1,000 face-to-face mentoring sessions. He speaks at events all over the world and is Entrepreneur in Residence for the city of Liverpool, and a Visiting Fellow at the University of Liverpool.
